Why Train Smarter, Not Harder or Longer

While most people want to train harder and longer to lose weight and get in shape when they getting older, personal trainer and fitness expert Carey Yang advises that one should train smarter, not necessarily harder or longer to get the results.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC -- a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.

Just because you've hit the 40's, 50's, 60's or older stage of your life, it doesn't mean you automatically need to hang up your athletic drive and take up pool aerobics. Of course, there is nothing wrong with turning to pool aerobics for fitness, but if you've been a competitive athlete, it's only natural to want to keep pushing yourself beyond the basics.

As we age, there is a gradual, and inevitable, decline in physical fitness ability. It doesn't have to be dramatic or sudden, but it will happen. If you can be prepared for it, and adjust both your physical fitness routine and your attitude, you may find that you can still compete at a high level.

If you still strive for peak performance and enjoy pushing yourself, you can still make the most of your workouts. To do so safely and comfortably, take a look at at the following tips.

1. Maintain Your Strength
Building and maintaining muscle strength is the best way to protect your joints from injury. Aging joints are more prone to arthritis and degenerative changes, but strong muscles, tendons and ligaments can take the pressure off the joints. Strong muscles will absorb more shock and are far more resilient to stress. Resistance exercise also helps prevent osteoporosis and bone loss, reduce lower-back pain, improve insulin resistance and glucose metabolism and reduce blood pressure. Building more strength is one of the best ways to lower body fat levels and maintain fitness with age. If you don't like weight training, you can still get full body strength building with yoga, and basic bodyweight routines.

2. Change your exercise routine
Avoid doing the same exercise routine day after day. By varying your exercise, you will help reduce the risk of overuse injuries, tendinitis, and joint pain. You will also reduce the specific muscle fatigue that comes from using the same muscles and movement patterns day after day.

3. Change Your Exercise Intensity
Rather than sticking with the same 30-45 minutes of steady cardiovascular exercise day after day, mix it up with some easy, long, slow exercise sessions, and then some shorter, more intense workouts, and even a few high intensity efforts of 30-60 seconds. The variety will challenge your cardiovascular system in new ways, and help you gain and maintain fitness improvements through the years. But do keep in mind that your hard efforts will most likely not be the same as in the past, and try to avoid competing with the youngsters. It's a set-up for injury.

4. Pay Attention To Your Body
Aging athletes may not like the idea of slowing down and listening to the voice that says not to overdo it, but it's critical that you accept that you can't push yourself to the same extent as the 20-year old you. This is where the power of wisdom should emerge. If your muscles are screaming at you to back off and something feels a bit off, you should listen to your body and back off. Pay attention to that voice of wisdom. It may help you avoid a muscle strain or worse. Many injuries occur when an athlete is fatigued, and this is even more likely with an older athlete.

5. Warm Up Longer and More Fully
Older athletes need to give their bodies a bit of extra time to warm up the muscles, joints and boost the blood flow.

6. Work On Your Balance
Balance and proprioception decrease with age, so spending time working specifically on this aspect of your sport can help you perform better, react more quickly and avoid injuries from missteps and falls. The easiest balance exercise is to stand on one foot. Make it harder by adding a movement, such as a half-squat or leg lift, and make it very challenging by closing your eyes. Do these exercises several times a week to work your nervous system along with your muscular system.

7. Take More Rest Days
Yep, it's true, the older you are, the longer it will take to recover from your workouts. So take a bit more down time for every hard training day you have. It's especially important for any hard strength training workouts, or and hard interval training days. Again, listen to your body and if you need two days off, take it.

Recommit New Year's Resolutions for Weight Loss in Hot Summer

Summer Outdoor Workout Stretching

New Year’s Eve bell seemed to be so far away that more than 50% people have already forgotten their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, exercise regularly and eat healthy by July. “It’s about time to recommitting to your New Year’s resolutions. And it’s never too late. You can start any day, any time.  Winners don’t quit,” says Carey Yang,  a certified persona trainer and fitness expert in New Jersey.
Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
“I think most people put so much emphasis on the once-a-year all-or-nothing approach to lose weight that they’re doomed to fail from from the get-go,” Yang says. “The mindset needs to change. Just like everything else we do in life. We have the end goals in mind in the beginning, We have a plan. We have small actions step to tackle. We follow up and check our progress every so often. Then we modify or change the course to reach the goal.  It’s the same thing as in the health, fitness and weight loss. People get caught up with so much media confusion.”
Yang offers 7 steps to re-evaluate mid-year and to re-commit New Year’s resolutions:
Step 1. Identify your three greatest accomplishments
Even if this year was a challenging year for you, odds are if you look close enough there’s something somewhere to be proud of.
Step 2. Analyze what you learned from each accomplishment
Now that you have identified your three greatest accomplishments, go back to each one. This time though identify exactly what you learned or were reminded of by each of them.
Step 3. Identify your biggest disappointments
Practically every company and individual resists analyzing their mistakes. That’s a shame because this is where the best learning comes from.
Step 4. Analyze what you learned from each failure or disappointment
No matter how great everything in life is going – we all make mistakes. The trick here is to really analyze them, what preceded them, what could you have done differently, and how can you prevent them in the future.
Step 5. Identify how you limited yourself last year and how can you stop
Were there certain actions you took or didn’t take that came back to haunt you? In order to make sure you don’t limit yourself again – you need to bring these self-defeating actions to the surface, confront them, and most importantly determine what you must do differently to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes all over again.
Step 6. Pragmatically review the information you have gathered
The goal of this exercise is not simply to know yourself and your business better but to actually use the information to make certain next year far surpasses this year. What are the big takeaways from answering each question? What do you know about yourself or your business that you didn’t realize or weren’t thinking about. Obviously, having this list isn’t going to do it all, you still need to take this new knowledge and use it.
Step 7: Use this Information to amaze yourself next year
The purpose here is to build in to your schedule, your interactions, your management style or whatever else you’ve surfaced in the previous questions and build yourself a new better approach.

Why Personal Trainers are the Best Fitness Solution for Baby Boomers and Seniors

Morris County NJ Personal Trainer and Senior Fitness Expert Carey Yang explains why customized exercise and fitness program by personal trainers is still the best fitness solution for baby boomers and seniors who want to get motivated to exercise safely, feel rejuvenated, correct posture and reduce back pain, improve balance and mobility, and prevent injuries and fall.
Aging baby boomers now can learn from the best personal trainer and fitness expert Carey Yang on how to exercise safely, improve cardiovascular conditioning, build muscular strength and endurance, improve balance and flexibility, and prevent injuries.
Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
Americans are growing older and living longer. By the year 2030, approximately 21 percent (or 70 million Americans) will be over 65 years of age. As baby boomers start to reach retirement age, they are looking for ways to extend their longevity, rejuvenate their youth and improve their quality of life. Senior fitness is a growing new trend.
“Exercise in senior fitness is an important factor in preventing or at least slowing down many age-related declines in physical functions and performance,” Yang says. “In addition to losing weight and eating healthy, aging baby boomers are concerned about cardiovascular conditioning, muscular and bone strength, flexibility and balance.”
Here is a testimonial from a baby boomer client Sharon in Madison, New Jersey:
“I’ve had back problems for the last 5 years that prohibited me from participating in any significant exercise programs. As a result, I had become unmotivated and reluctant to commit (physically or financially) to any type of training. After speaking with Carey, I decided to give it one more try. Carey’s professionalism, knowledge and most importantly, patience – has made my training a positive experience. He was sensitive to my physical challenges, yet consistent in his training and expectations. The progress has been steady and I “honestly” have had less back pain and more mobility than I’ve had in years. Carey has definitely provided a rejuvenation for this baby boomer and I willcontinue on this path to a healthier lifestyle.”
“I have many baby boomer clients who enjoy modified kickboxing. They’re loving it! They feel powerful, strong and younger. They absolutely enjoy the workout without feeling that they are exercising,” Yang says. “This is the best gift I can give them.”
Yang advocates lifelong fitness and health. He offers a few tips for baby boomers to start an exercise program.
1.   Consult an orthopaedic surgeon or sports medicine specialist if you have any prior sports or orthopaedic injuries.
2.   Always warm up and stretch before any physical activity.
3.   Train with a qualified fitness professional, at least in the beginning, to guide
4.   Invest in good equipment and proper shoes.
5.   Start slow and progress steadily.
6.   Listen to your body.

Chris Christie tried it. But is weight loss surgery right for you?

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recently revealed that he had underwent lap-band weight loss surgery to lose weight and improve health. Is weight loss surgery right for you? Morris County NJ personal trainer weights the pros and cons.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie revealed he secretly underwent a weight-loss surgery in February known as the lap band and has dropped roughly 40 pounds since.  Christie agreed to the operation at the urging of family and friends after turning 50 last September.
“I want to applaud him for taking this big step to do something about his weight, not for political reason, for himself and his family,” says Carey Yang, a certified persona trainer and fitness expert in Morris County New Jersey.
Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
“Now not every one can just walk up to the doctor for the surgery. There are certain criteria you have to meet. Although it indeed helps drop some initial weight quick in the beginning, it’s not a cure-all. I know some people gain a good part of lost weight back as they don’t commit to adopting a healthy lifestyle change, and engaging regular exercise and a healthy diet,” Yang  says. “There are also benefits, risks and side effects that one has to consider.”
The following criteria may make you a candidate for weight loss surgery:
1. A body mass index (BMI) greater than 40.
2. Your BMI is greater than 35, and you have obesity-related health problems that may improve with weight loss.
3. You can demonstrate that traditional weight loss programs like diet and exercise haven’t worked.
4. You are ready to commit to permanent lifestyle changes after surgery.
5. You understand the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery.
The primary benefit of weight loss surgery is weight loss. Gastric bypass surgery causes an average loss of 61% of excess weight. Gastric banding surgery causes slightly less at an average of 47% of excess weight lost. Improvements in general health are also common. Obesity-related medical conditions usually improve or even go away after weight loss surgery, including diabetes, severe arthritis, obstructive sleep apnea, and high blood pressure.
Weight loss surgery carries real risks. As many as 10% of people have complications afterward. Usually problems are only unpleasant or inconvenient, and might cause some pain and discomfort, or require additional surgeries, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, wound infections, and abdominal hernias.
Serious complications do occur after weight loss surgery and can sometimes be life-threatening such as blood clot to the lungs (pulmonary embolism), leaks in the new surgical, gut connections, bleeding ulcers, and heart attacks.
Weight loss surgery should be the beginning of a new and healthy lifestyle. To make the most of the surgery and to maximize results, people need to:
1. Eat healthy
Nearly all severely obese people have unhealthy eating habits. A common problem is “binge eating.” After weight loss surgery, eating large amounts of food at one sitting can make you sick. For many people, learning to eat small, frequent meals is a challenge.
2. Exercise
Keeping weight off is far easier when a person is active and exercises. In addition, exercise reduces rates of many diseases, including cancer and heart disease. To maintain weight loss in the long term, exercise is essential.
Such profound changes in lifestyle don’t happen automatically or easily for most. It’s simply but not easy. Pounds don’t just pile on in one day. For people who need guidance, coaching or training, it’s best to see a weight loss coach or experienced personal trainer. http://www.BeyondFitnessSolutions.com.

March Madness Weight Loss and Dieting Special

Carey Yang, CPT - Denville Morris County NJ Personal Trainer
It’s March Madness time for NCAA Basketball tournaments to crown national champions. Denville, Morris County NJ personal trainer Carey Yang announces a special March Madness special to celebrate the national craze for college basketball games.
Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
“Now it’s springtime. Although the weather hasn’t been so kind this winter, it shouldn’t prevent you from working out and eating healthy. If you haven’t done so, it’s about time for spring training and getting ready for summer beach swimsuit season,” Yang says.
Yang offers four strategies to help overweight and obese men and women burn fat 24/7 by optimizing fat burning hormones and elevating metabolism around the clock.
1. Optimized Nutrient Combining: Avoid deadly nutrient combination of carb and fat. Release of insulin and fat promote storage. Do this by simply protein in every meal.
2. Carb Syncing: Prime your body with carb at the right times, in the morning and after intense exercise.
3. Strategic Overfeeding: Restricting calories and dieting put your body to starvation mode and decrease your metabolism to burn less fat. Strategic overfeeding resets your metabolism and keep your fat-burning furnace running again.
4. Metabolic Resistance Training: This type of exercise provides a huge metabolic stimulus to the entire muscular and cardiovascular systems at the same time through strategically designed full body resistance training combined with minimal rest.  This is what allows for an unparalleled exercise-induced increase in metabolism for hours and hours after your session—something we call the “after burn.”
“When you combine the metabolism power of Metabolic Resistance Training with the hormone-regulating power of Optimized Nutrient Timing, Carb Syncing, and Strategic Overfeeding, the only thing your body can do is respond by burning fat 24/7,” Yang says.

Best Exercises to Tone up Flabby Back and Thighs by Morris County In-Home Personal Trainer

For hundreds of thousands of middle-aged Americans having trouble in getting rid of flabby back fat and jiggly thigh fat now can learn from Morris County NJ personal trainer and fitness expert Carey Yang with the simple and most effective 2-in-1 combination toning exercise.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
“Women are particularly having trouble in their back and thighs. Obesity is now epidemic and spreading to younger people in their 20s and 30,” Yang says. “Don’t forget. Nice and firm body starts from your kitchen. That means you have to be diligent in your nutrition and diet plan to support your fitness and exercise training program.”
Lat and back muscles are also typical problem area because most people sit and slouch while working on their computers, watching TV or driving. Strengthening back muscles helps correct poor body alignment and posture.
As people sit more, they don’t exercise their legs as much. Walking is a great general exercise. It still doesn’t work the leg muscles as much, particularly in the trouble areas.
Here is an example of 2-in-1 toning workout routine that combine squat and low row exercises all in one move. “Both exercises are challenging in their own meirt. Focus on quality, not quantity. Pay attention to muscle contraction. Do multiple sets of 3 to 5 repetitions if you have to.” Yang says.

Why New Year's Resolution Syndrome Is More Deadly Than Flu Epidemc

New Year's Resolutions Goal List
For millions of Americans who are suffering from “New Year’s Resolution Syndrome” now may find out weight loss resolution can be more deadly than the flu epidemic spreading across the nation, according to  Denville, Morris County, NJ personal trainer and fitness expert Carey Yang.
Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
“New Year’s Resolutions syndrome is a epidemic disease in different context in that people are making the same-old-but-never-worked New Year’s resolutions over and over.  It’s insane to expect different and better results by doing the same old,” Yang says.
“It’s the second week after the New Year. If the past history is the guide, one-third of people who vow to exercise and eat well already quit. New Year’s resolutions for weight loss are illusions or illusive goal-setting tool that have failed people many times over,” Yang says.
Yang adds, the problem is that people make resolutions with right intentions but wrong attitudes. It comes from the place of fear and not having or lack of true passion and commitment.
The single biggest key to improving both your performance and your results seems to go ignored by almost everybody. If you want to be at the top of your game you absolutely must review, analyze, and learn from what has already happened.
Here are 7 steps to follow to ensure your New Year’s resolutions stick.

What do you know about yourself or your business that you didn’t realize or weren’t thinking about?
Obviously, having this list isn’t going to do it all, you still need to take this new knowledge and use it.
Fortunately, that’s what the last question is centered around. And here it is…
Step 7: Use this Information to amaze yourself next year
The purpose here is to build in to your schedule, your interactions, your management style or whatever else you’ve surfaced in the previous questions and build yourself a new better approach.

According to a study just published in Journal of the American Medical Association, middle-aged American women need to exercise in a moderate intensity an hour a day, every single day, just to avoid weight gain.
The study followed 34,079 women over 13 years. In that time, they gained an average of about 6 pounds each. Don’t let the word “average” fool you into thinking that a handful of really heavy women skewed the average. Some 87 percent of the women gained weight.
An hour a day, every single day?! Is this even a possible goal to set and reach?
“The answer is Yes,” says Carey Yang, owner and master trainer of Denville, NJ-based Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC. “But take one baby step at a time before you get frustrated, burnt out and quit.”
Yang shares his strategies with middle-aged women how to avoid weight gain. It goes beyond just an hour of moderate exercise a day.
1.Know where you are. You got to know your numbers – weigh, body mass index (BMI), body fat, and waist measurement. User-friendly calculators can be found www.cdc.gov/healthy weight/assessing. If you are not sure, find a fitness trainer in the gym and hire one to your home for consultation.
2.Exercise right and amp up intensity. The study refers to an hour of moderate exercise. It doesn’t mean you have to gym every day or run on treadmill or bike. Other activites such as walking,  hiking, golfing all help 300 to 400 calories. If you increase the activity level and intensity, you can even burn more calories by running, aerobics or swimming.
3.Watch your calories. The truth is that you can’t outtrain a bad diet. You can train all day, every day, but eat all night and more than you can burn off, you will gain weight.
4.Portion control. Most people are overweight for one simple reason: They eat too much. You have to learn what a serving size is. It varies depending on the type of food, form and measuring unit. You’ll find calorie counting isn’t that hard. It may be tough at first, but in time you’ll find that you don’t have to be stuffed to be satisfied.

No BS Guide to Thanksgiving Holiday Diet for Weight Loss

With Thanksgiving just four days away and the holiday season around the corner, it is hard for people to resist all the eating and drinking, and the weight gain that comes with it. If history is the guide, the average Americans who are already struggling with their weight are going to pack on another 10 to 15 pounds by the New Year.

"This is a year-after-year vicious cycle. People gain weight during the holiday season and try to lose weight throughout the year. Most people fail, so they end up with net weight-gain of 5 to 10 pounds a year. Gradually, it’s 10, 20, then 30 pounds, and more," says Carey Yang, a certified personal trainer and fat loss expert based in Morris County, New Jersey.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC -- a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.

"One of the biggest traps for people wanting to lose weight is to use foods as a way of comforting themselves or soothing their stress and anxiety and make them feel good," Yang says. "Holidays, parties, social functions, weather are all triggers to binge eating or emotional eating. If you feel guility after eating, that’s unhealthy eating behavior. You should feel satisfied after eating for physical hungry."

Yang offers a sensible, practical holiday eating guide - what to eat and what not  - to help people navigate the dining table, cocktail party, and snack bar. "You don't have to deprive yourself of holiday feast and holiday spirit. You do have to have the willpower to say "No," says Yang.

DO sit or stand yourself as far away from the appetizer table as possible.

DO eat a little less and ramp up your exercise leading up toward the event. When the event takes place, you’ll look and feel better than you first expected and you will feel less guilty when you enjoy yourself at the event.

DO bring your own dish to the occasion. Nobody has to know that it’s healthy or low calorie. At least you’ll know how many calories it has and you will have something to snack on of your own choice.

DO sit at the table as far from the unhealthy food options as possible. If you have to keep standing up, putting your drink down and reaching across Auntie Annie to grab a piece of bread.

DO send people home with food if you are hosting a party. Leftover foods make people overeat.

DON’T try to convince yourself that you’re going to eat less after the holiday event. It's okay to eat and enjoy the foods at the event.

DON”T mix-drink wine, beer or hard alcohol. Your system will get so messy afterwards. Or at least have something to eat in between different drinks.

DON’T sit in front of the TV. What’s on TV this thanksgiving? An awesome football game. What’s in front of the TV? Most likely a table with unhealthy snacks.

Yang says, one last word, I want to wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday. Drink responsibly and drive safe.

Bodyweight Fat Burning Workout System to Lose More Weight in Less Time

For millions of Americans struggling with their weights, tired of the same old gym workouts and bored with cookie-cutter diet program without seeing results, now they can enjoy a safe and effective rapid fat-loss program with their own bodyweight-based exercises. “It’s your own bodyweight, it’s free and you can do the exercises anytime, anywhere you want,” says Carey Yang, a certified persona trainer and fitness expert in New Jersey.
Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
“Far too many people are wasting their time and fat-burning potential every time they’re doing the cookie-cutter gym workouts and long boring cardio exercises,” Yang says. “Here are three mistakes they make for not seeing results they want.”
1. They only burn calories during the workouts.
If you want to melt maximum fat in the shortest time possible, you need to fire up your fat burning metabolism so it’s pumping at 100%, 24 hours a day. They were not working with enough intensity to maximally ignite their fat burning fires. The result? Unfortunately, as soon as they finished their workouts, all their fat burning would stop completely. Their metabolism would go cold.
2. They are not burning enough total calories to lose fat quickly.
Finding the right exercise balance is tricky. You have to train hard, as we already saw. But if you add too much intensity you’ll burn out. You can’t work like that every day. On the other had, do too little exercise and you won’t reach your goals either. You need to find a way to squeeze out every last opportunity for burning off calories, without pushing your body too far and overtraining.
3. They destroy their metabolism and damage their fat burning lean muscle mass.
This is the scariest of the three. And the one that’s responsible for jiggly arms, dimpled thighs, “slow metabolisms” and the dreaded rebound weight gain that follows most diets. The wrong workout program actually forces your body to eat its own lean muscle tissue! And when that happens, you destroy the machinery that keeps you lean.
Healthy lean muscle mass does more than just burn calories. It has a huge role to play in how you store calories and how well you burn your body’s fat stores for fuel.
Here are 3 workout secret weapons to keep you burning fat at 100% capacity.
1. Metabolic-Muscle Workouts:
This is where 90% of fat loss plans fail. Maintaining and even building the right level of lean calorie-burning muscle is essential if you want to hit 100% of your fat burning potential.
But most people ignore muscle entirely. The more muscle you have, the more machinery you can put to work, and the higher the “energy cost” you can create during a workout.
Another way muscle mass accelerates weight loss is through “insulin sensitivity”. Insulin is your body’s “storage” hormone — it shuttles energy and nutrients from your blood into your cells. If your insulin sensitivity goes down, you store more energy as fat.
2. Afterburner Workouts:
If you want to lose the greatest amount of flab as quickly as possible, you need to transform your metabolism into a 24/7 fat burning machine. And the best way to do that is with Interval Training.
When you do an interval Afterburner session, you actually keep melting flab for up to 38 hours after your workout. It’s called EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption). In the 24-38 hours after a high intensity session, your body works frantically to restore a “normal” state. It has to replenish the fuels you used, remove the garbage byproducts left in your muscle cells and repair any muscle damage from your exercise session.
3. Cardio Movement:
A chain of bodyweight exercises fit together in a fun movement chain. They’re designed to take your body through it’s full range of motion, so you never encounter repetitive stress. It allows you to keep burning calories between more intense workouts, while still recovering 100%.
