Top 3 Myths about Getting Ripped 6 Pack Abs Busted by NJ Celebrity Personal Trainer

Carey Yang, Certified Personal Trainer
Fitness Expert & Abs Specialist

The quest to getting a set of ripped 6 pack abs has been a world craze as far and as long as I can remember. The media is so obsessed about the flat stomach or ripped abs image. We're brain-washed that we gotta have to them be good, fit, and desired person.

Over the years, many "myths" or half-baked truths have been rumoring around. Most people are confused by different opinions from different experts. The lightening speed of internet and social media makes it even worse.

Each of the following myths have some merit. They become a myth when an unethical fitness professional or expert takes a narrow perspective in order to stir up controversy in an effort to get you to buy their hyped up fat loss program. It's time to cut through the chase and set the record straight.

Myth #1: Abs Are Made In The Kitchen

It's important to watch what you eat and how much you eat in the kitchen. You simply can't out-train a lousy diet to build muscles, lose fat and sculpt 6 pack abs.

However, I have been many scrawny men or skinny women dieting down to low percent of body fat and still don't have abs that pop out.

So if you want to develop eye catching abs that really stand out, you still need to train your abs and work them hard in addition to following an effective diet.

Myth #2: Crunches Are Bad For Your Back

Unfortunately most people do the crunches wrong and strain their necks and back. They conclude that crunches are useless and bad for their back.

Performed properly, crunches or curl-ups are effective exercise to directly work on your abdominal muscles. Abs - short for "rectus abdominis" - is designed to flex for spinal flexion movement.

Performing crunching movements with proper form is the best way to fully develop them. Floor crunches, stability ball crunches, cable crunches, and double crunch are all great exercises for developing your abs.

Myth #3: You Can't Train Your Lower Abs

Some fitness trainers argue that you can't work your lower abs, because the Rectus Abdominis is one long muscle.  It's only partially true. Just like any muscle-building exercise, you can put more emphasis on certain part of the muscle by performing the exercise in different angle and range of motion.

The key here is "emphasis" not to complete isolate lower abs. Hanging Knee Raises, Reverse Crunches, and the Jackknife among several other exercises place extra emphasis on the lower abdominal muscles. Basically any exercise where the movement involves tilting your pelvis up toward your chest, will place extra emphasis on the lower section of your abs.

The word "emphasis" is the key here. With each of the above abs exercises your entire Rectus Abdominis muscle will be working, but you should "feel" more tension and contraction in the lower abs compared to how they "feel" when you are performing other crunching movements.

If you want to sculpt a sexy set of six pack abs while developing a strong core  and look your best, you must follow a strategically designed workout program that includes functional exercises, crunching movements that emphasize the upper and mid section of the Rectus Abdominis, crunching movements that emphasize the lower section of the Rectus Abdominins, and exercises that work the Transverse Abdominals and Obliques.

In a final word, remember, your diet is equally important as your abs training routine. Check out Metabolic Masterpiece for Fat Loss Quckie.

Top 20 Fitness and Weight Loss Trends for 2012

Strength training, core conditioning, yoga, pilates, pole dancing, Zumba, kettlebell, P90X, weight loss, TRX, boot camp, battling rope, abs machine? You name it. There always seems to be new gadgets, new exercises, new programs, new twists of the old stuff that promise rapid weight loss, muscle toning, flat abs, and magic body transformation results

It's particularly true around this time of the year where people are making New Year's resolutions to lose weight, eat healthy, exercise more, and get in better shape.

As consumers, people have to get educated to separate a fad from a trend before trying out.

Here is the definition from Wikipedia:
"A fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior's being perceived as novel in some way.

A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.

Though the term trend may be used interchangeably with fad, a fad is generally considered a fleeting behavior whereas a trend is considered to be a behavior that evolves into a relatively permanent change."
Simply put, a fad is something hot for sometimes - a few years perhaps - then gone. A trend could start as a fad then develops into something so popular that stays for the long run.

As we're ringing in New Year 2012, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) conducted a worldwide survey by 2,620 fitness professionals who ranked their selections into a list of 20 trends they believed would be big in 2012.

Here is list of the top 20 fitness trends for 2012 according to ACSM survey:
1. Educated, certified and experienced fitness professionals
2. Strength training
3. Fitness programs for older adults
4. Exercise and weight loss
5. Children and obesity
6. Personal training
7. Core training
8. Group personal training
9. ZUMBA and other dance workouts
10. Functional fitness
11. Yoga
12. Comprehensive health promotion programming at the worksite
13. Boot camp
14. Outdoor activities
15. Reaching new markets
16. Spinning (indoor cycling)
17. Sport-specific training
18. Worker incentive programs
19. Wellness coaching
20. Physician referrals

"The survey attempts to show a distinction between fads and trends and is a good representation of what's occurring in the health and fitness industry worldwide," said Walter Thompson, Ph.D., the lead author of the survey.

Zumba dance workout has been gaining popularity in recent years and is strengthening its position. It's curious to see if it will follow Pilates' short run in the top 20 fitness trends. Pilates was ranked in the top 10 for three consecutive years, beginning in 2008, but dropped off in 2011.

There are always trends that won't change as they are the fundamentals no matter what you do such as the No.1, educated, certified and experienced fitness professionals and personal trainers, which has been ranked No. 1 for five years since the survey initiated.

I always educate my clients that these are just "tools" to get what you want. They can't replace the basic principles and ignore how our body works. Nothing can replace the education, knowledge and experience in any profession so is in fitness training profession.

A returning trend claiming No.3 spot for 2012 is the fitness program for older adults. As baby boomers are aging into their golden years, they still want to stay active, exercise, eat healthy and look and feel younger.

I can vouch for that from my personal clientele base. The median age of my personal training clients is 53. I have clients in their 60s who love to work out, learn new moves, stay healthy and feel good about their bodies.

New Year's Resolutions for Weight Loss & Diet Made Simple

New Year's Resolutions Goals List

t's time of the year again when people celebrate the holidays and welcome the New Year. "Weight and diet is on the top 3 New Year's Resolutions for most people. Health and fitness is the case where haste makes waste, as the old saying goes. Many people start the new year with good momentum, then lose steam by the end of January," says Carey Yang, a certified personal trainer and fitness expert in Morris County, NJ.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC -- a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.

By the end of January, one-third of people quit. Only half people still stay on their New Year's resolutions after 6 months. "That's a disappointing statistics,"Yang says.

"Lose weight, have a healthy fit, exercise regularly don't have to be that hard," Yang says. "It can be simple and easy if people review their past patterns and behaviors and answer a few questions."

The first step is to take a look at what your nutrition and exercise habits have been like for the last 12 months.

Think about questions like these and write down your answers in a notebook so that you can look back at them again a year from now:

- How does your weight compare with a year ago?
- Do you feel healthy and have a lot of energy or are you tired all the time?
- Do you take vitamins or other nutritional supplements?
- Do you eat at home most of the time? If so, what types of foods? Whole fresh foods, boxed foods or TV dinners?
- If you eat in a restaurant, what types of restaurants do you go to and what types of foods do you choose?
- How physically active are you? Do you exercise regularly?
- Do you eat healthy size portions, or do you stuff yourself with every meal?
- Do you smoke?
- How much alcohol do you drink each week?

It’s important to take an honest look at your health habits in order to set goals for your health and diet. The answers are in the questions.

Morris County NJ Personal Trainer and Fitness Expert Carey Yang Interviewed by MSN Fitbit on How to Lose Love Handles with New Moves in Slim Muffin Top

Morris County NJ personal trainer and fitness expert Carey Yang is interviewed and featured in the authoritative source for diet, fitness and weight loss site MSN Fitbie. The title of the article is "How to Lose Your Love Handles: 10 Moves to Slim Your Mufftin Top."

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC -- a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.

MSN Fitbie is the authoritative online destination bringing premium content from Rodale's brands, including Women's Health, Prevention, Runner's World, and Men's Health, combined with MSN Lifestyle portfolio of sites, offering advice on how to look, feel and live better by making the right diet and fitness choices.

"It's a new breakthrough for me that would help me catapult my health and fitness credibility to the next level," Yang says. "As one of trusted MSN content partners, Fitbie site could potentially reach 70 millions people around the world."

This article attempts to educate people the right mindset, diet, lifestyle and exercises to help them shrink love handle by attack unwanted belly fat from all angles. Ten toning moves are recommended to target hips, abs, obliques, and lower back.

"Regional fat storage has a lot to do with diet, lifestyle, and overall body fat level," Yang says. "In addition to overall weight loss and eating a diet rich in belly-flattening foods, keeping levels of estrogen, insulin, and cortisol in balance by managing stress and getting a good night's rest is the key to sustainable, long-term fat loss."

Yang recommends ten moves in the article that help strengthen the muscles surround waistline. Many of the moves can be done at home without any special equipment. A basic weekly workout routine include performing two or three 45-minute strength-training sessions each week, and dedicate 10 to 15 minutes to abs and core exercises. Alternate between upper-body and lower-body exercises for a total-body workout. If done right, every strength-training move involves core and abs muscles.

"You can accelerate fat loss by adding intense 15-minute cardio intervals to the end of each strength-training session or by performing 30-minute cardio interval sessions 2 days a week when you do not strength-train," Yang says. "But don't overdo it. Overtraining will increase the stress hormone cortisol, causing more fat storage than fat burning, and making you more prone to fatigue and injury."

The full article and the ten moves to slim muffin top with instructions are available at:

The 4 Forgotten Habits of Highly Fit and Healthy People

If you missed the last article on The Top 3 Habits of Highly Fit and Healthy People, you can read it here or click on the following link.

http://www.beyondfitnesssolutions.com/beyondfitness/2011/09/weight-loss/top-3-habits-of-highly-fit-and-healthy-people/

Here are four more habits of highly fit and healthy people. They're equally important elements to keep a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Habit #4: They Have Goals

Highly fit, in-shape people always have a goal. After all, you can’t improve something unless you know what you are trying to improve it to. Those goals can be small and incremental, or large and ambitious. In either case, they act with a sense of purpose when it comes to their health and physical fitness.

Whether that goal is to maintain their current physique, improve it, reduce body fat, gain additional muscle, increase their endurance or stamina, become more flexible, improve their coordination, or develop a better golf swing, they will always have a goal that they are shooting for.

They have more stable blood sugar, more consistent energy levels, and are less prone to gaining body fat because they rarely eat more calories in any given meal than their body can utilize.

Healthy Habit #5: They Drink Water

Highly fit people understand the benefits of water. When you see them, whether it's at the gym, at home or in the office, a bottle of water will often be close at hand. Proper hydration isn’t just important to athletes and runners, but everyone. Water can blunt fatigue, improve concentration and thought clarity, discourage the formation of kidney stones, improve digestion and improve performance in the gym.

Healthy Habit #6: They Don’t Diet!

Highly fit and healthy people understand that long term health and fitness requires consistently eating smart. And smart eating for a highly fit person is just part of their everyday routine.

They don’t skip breakfast. The often bring their own lunch to work and they seem to always be snacking on healthy foods like apples, vegetables and nuts.

The one exception to this rule is competitive male and female bodybuilding. Competitive bodybuilders will often diet leading up to a competition in order to drive their body fat down to very low levels. It’s very difficult for any person, no matter how well-conditioned they are, to maintain these extremely low, competition-grade body fat levels for any significant amount of time.

Healthy Habit # 7: They Record Their Progress

Healthy, highly-fit people keep track of their exercise so they can determine whether they are actually making progress toward their goals. You can’t improve what you don’t measure.

It may simply be a notebook where they write down each exercise, the weight and completed reps. Or it may be more formal, for example a store-bought exercise and fitness log or a sheet provided by their gym.

It takes conscious and consistent effort to break old habits and form new healthy habits. Start small. Pick 1 to 2 habits a week to work on. Pay attention to your focus and environment. Make sure they're helping, not sabotaging.

Big Fat Lies about Weight Loss

The truth about weight loss is that anyone can lose weight. The truth behind the truth is that how long one can sustain the weight loss and keep it off.

The real-person testimonials in product and program advertisements are indeed powerful and inspiring. However, most show only the before and after pictures. They rarely show what happens to the subject or model after 3 or 5 years. In addition, read the fine prints at the bottom. It typically reads,"xxxx's results are not typical." What a bummer!

This is the time frame for long-term adherence of a successul weight management program including healthy lifestyle change, regular strength training and cardio exercise, and proper nutrition plan.

Many people are so fired up after New Year that could actually serve them no good. They start strong and begin to wane after a few weeks. It is how strong you finish it that matters.

Here are 3 motivation boosters that will help you put things in perspective when you're stuck.

1. Be realistic. Dreaming about the body of your dreams is exciting. Dreaming without a realistic plan is fantasy. Compare only to yourself, not the celebrities or models.

2. Shift your focus. Women, in particularly, are constantly on the diet. It's the most guarded open secret in the company cafeteria. Foods and dieting cracks are the gossips of the queen. Divert your attention in foods for losing weight to the good cause of staying healthy for youself and for your family.

3. Treat yourself. Allow your favorite treats in small portion so that you don't feel deprived. Otherwise, you may binge whenever you get a chance.

Don't lie to yourself. Be truthful to yourself about weight loss.

Abs Uncrunched: How to Get Your 6 Pack Abs Without Endless Floor Crunches

When most people think about getting rid of bulging mid-section, the first thing they do is situps or crunches on the floor. To their disappointment, after thousands of crunches, their mid-section don't seem to deflate at all.

The truth about having flat stomach or well-developed abdominals "6 pack abs" remain in the kitchen. In other words, it involves proper nutrition, healthy habits and regular exercises consistently.

With busy modern lifestyle trying to fit everything into schedule, most people should take advantage of exercises that involves moving mulitple joints and muscle groups. They expend more calories to lose weight and work the whole body If you have extra time, you can certain do isolation exercise to work a specific muscle group.

In the last post, I introduce 3 quick exercises you can do at the kitchen sink while you're making coffee in the morning. You can get your 15-minute whole body workout while you're waiting for the coffee.

Now if you have extra time or finish the 3 exercises before the coffee is made, here are 3 more exercises that you can do to work your whole body including your core and abs.

At least You don't have to drop on the kitchen floor doing crunches.

Squat

Squat and Knee Strike
Do your squat. As you stand up from the bottom position, start to shift your weight to one foot and raise the knee of the other foot. When you stand up on one leg, chamber and strike with the other knee. As you exhale at this point, tighten your abs and obliques.

You can do all repetitions on one side and switch to the other. Or you can alternate side to side.

Squat and Front Kick
Similar to squat and knee strike, but this time as you're standing up on one leg, do front kick with the other leg. There are variations to front kick such as front snap kick where you target with your instep whereas front thrust kick makes contact with your heel.

Squat and Side Bend
Again, do your squats. As you stand up and shift your weight to one leg, bend the knee of the other leg and raise directly to the side. This will work on the sides or obliques.

While you may not relate these exercises to your abs, do them right with correct techniques and intensity, you'll feel the burn on your legs, buttocks, and abs.
